Following the tradition of many
generations, Michel Fonné studied winemaking in Dijon and Champagne
where he learnt about sparkling wines. After an appenticeship in
California, he returned to Alsace in 1989 to assume management of
the Barthe René estate from his retiring uncle, René Barth.
In 1977, Michel took ownership of
the vineyards of his father, Henri Fonné and merged them with those
of Barth René.
In total Michel Fonné is
responsible for 12 hectares of vineyards which are planted with all
seven of the Alsace grape varieties- Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc,
Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat, Gewurztraminer.
Michel has vines in Grand Cru vineyards (Marckrain and Mambourg) and
other famous vineyards (Roemerberg, Rebgarten and Vogelgarten.
About 10% of the plantings are dedicated to Crémant d'Alsace.
The wines are very, very good with
the Crémants being particularly notable - the perfect apéritif with
soft gentle bubbles.
